Workplace Fatalities Linked To An Improving Economy

On Behalf of | Oct 27, 2014 | Workplace Injuries |

A recent study reveals an alarming statistic – as the economy improves, the number of work place accidents and deaths increase.  The Press-Enterprise investigation evaluated federal workplace accident data concerning San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, and California as a whole. Statistics show that for these southern California counties, an average of 16 people die each year in workplace accidents.  This number is likely greater because many incidents go unreported.  Further, statistics indicate that when the economy is on the upswing and more people are working, fatal incidents become more prevalent.  For example in 2006, when the unemployment rate was the lowest in recent years, 29 workplace deaths were reported.  However, only 8 work place deaths were cited in 2009, when more people lacked jobs.  The study’s authors note that statewide, 375 workplace deaths occurred in 2012.  The most dangerous sectors?  Manufacturing and farming.

According to OSHA, the majority of California’s workplace accidents involve falls, electrocutions or vehicular incidents, such as accidents involving forklifts, dump trucks, semis and earthmovers.  Many times, accidents occur when employers require workers to operate equipment without the proper training or emphasize production over safety.  Through improved work conditions and training, employers could prevent serious accident and fatalities.

When fatal workplace accident do occur, it is important for families to consult with an experienced California work place accident law firm.  A skilled workplace accident attorney can begin an investigation into the conditions surrounding an accident, and the factors that may have led to a incident occurring – including whether it may be possible to file a civil personal injury lawsuit or wrongful death action.
