Failure To Follow Safety Guidelines Is Often The Root Cause Of Work Place Accidents

On Behalf of | Mar 20, 2015 | Workplace Accidents |

A year after the death of a woman killed on the movie set of the “Midnight Rider,” friends and family called for a moment of silence to remember Sarah Jones, and to call attention to work place dangers on movie sets and work locations.  Jones was killed, and eight other people on the crew suffered serious personal injuries when a train sped through where they were shooting a film.   Numerous work place accidents have occurred on movie sets over the last several years, with this incident triggering greater awareness of safety issues.

According to federal investigators from the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), while guidelines exist for shooting in dangerous locations – such as on railroad tracks – these guidelines weren’t followed.  This is often the case when workplace injuries occur in any industry.

In fact OSHA provides that the top causes of work place accidents include the failure to follow safe work procedures, the failure to have safety devices in order, and the failure to train workers concerning the proper safety procedures. More often than not, investigations into the root cause of serious work place accidents reveal conditions that employers and owner can and should correct to prevent future incidents.

Further, because the fines set by OSHA are relatively low, some business will cut corners concerning safety, and any fines incurred be considered as simply the cost of doing business.

As a result, prosecuting those who allow dangerous workplaces to exist is paramount – whether on a movie set, construction site or factory floor.
