News sources report that a federal contractor responsible for overseeing nuclear facilities is under investigation following several serious accidents. One incident involved the fatality of construction worker who died after a 1,200-foot pylon fell on him. An investigation into the incident revealed that the company violated safety training regulations and procedures for pile driving operations, and as such was received 2 citations for “serious” violations.
Another man died working for the same contractor in a construction accident while working at the abandoned Kern Power Plant in Bakersfield, California. He had been in an aerial basket torch-cutting beams, when one of the beams collapsed. The beam knocked over the basket, and the worker fell to his death. An investigation found that necessary safety precautions were not being followed at the work site, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited the company with a serious violation. Upon inspection, additional safety violations were discovered.
Currently, federal contractors do not need to report their safety records to the federal government as a condition of receiving federal contracts. An Executive Order – the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order – seeks to change this. The Executive Order would help protect the millions of workers in the construction industry. The order is expected to be implemented in the Spring of 2016.
