Unfortunately, some people who work for California companies get injured while they’re on the job. Sometimes, a severe workplace injury can cause a permanent disability. This type of disability is one that permanently affects your ability to work for a living. Here’s more information about what to expect after a work-related permanent disability occurs.

Applying for permanent disability benefits

The first step after any injury is to let yourself recover. Unfortunately, most people with debilitating injuries find that medical problems linger long after their initial recovery periods. However, you can begin receiving some help by applying for permanent disability benefits.

It’s important to note that the permanent disability benefits you potentially receive might not be more than or equal to your previous income. These benefits will also not cover any losses that aren’t related to your career-ending injury. Your compensation relative to permanent disability benefits depends on the following factors:

  • Your age and occupation
  • When your injury occurred
  • Your overall impairment level as determined by a physician

Getting another evaluation

You might disagree with your primary physician’s initial evaluation. If this is the case, you’ll need to contact your claims administrator and let them know that you disagree with the results of your initial evaluation. You’ll also need to choose between one of three qualified medical evaluators for another evaluation. After making your selection, you’ll need to make an appointment to get a second opinion about your disability status.

Permanent disability benefits allow those dealing with long-term injuries to seek financial relief. Before you can receive these benefits, you’ll need to get evaluated by a qualified medical evaluator and submit some paperwork.
